COGENERATION

The energy sources used for the electrolysis operation involve a combination of fossil based electricity and hydroelectricity. US Magnesium generates 25% of its total plant power (excluding brine concentration in solar ponds) from gas turbines that are used for the flash drying operation.

In regard to the entire process, US Magnesium utilizes solar power as the principle source of energy that accounts for more than 90% of the total energy input. Solar energy concentrates brine from the Great Salt Lake, increasing the concentration of magnesium chloride about 20 times.
